The aptly-named Camberwell Beauty was first described in 1748 when two were spotted in ‘Cool Arbour Lane near Camberwell’.  

Common in Europe and from the same family as the more familiar Peacock and Red Admiral, the Beauty migrates from Scandinavia to Britain and does not breed here, though adults may overwinter.  A strong flyer, it’s most likely to be sighted in Eastern counties and in good years appears in gardens, attracted to buddleia.

For years, a local factory had a large mural of this gorgeous butterfly with the dark blue wings with cream (fading to white) edges.

The factory was demolished, and the mural now appears on the premises of the Lynn AC Boxing Club in Wells Way.  Incidentally, the oldest amateur club in the world...
